The North Dakota Badlands, June of 1999
I started my summer by riding the Maah Dah Hey Trail in North Dakota. This is a new trail that connects the North and South Units of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It runs 120 miles and we went with an outfitter named Swede Nelson. It took us 5 days of riding and we had a wonderful time. For more pictures of the badlands follow this link, ND Badlands
There was a group of 15 of us, some from Minnesota , North Dakota, and Wisconsin . This is Joey and Montana in the back. Joey teaches with me now, and this was the first time he joined me on a ride. Bothe he and Montana enjoyed themselves, and I think he would have liked to join me on the rest of my adventures.
A typical lunch break, the horses get a few minutes to graze and we ate cold sandwiches, peaches, beans and a salted nut roll. amazing how good that stuff tastes in the afternoon. Cody and I checking out the trail down.......... This is called Devil's Pass....wonder why
We had to cross the Missouri river. I am riding Tony, the wonder horse....wondered if I would have to use pressure to get across, but he was a wonder and even trotted the last part. I guess he wanted out of there too. You can see Swede in the middle with a catch rope just in case anyone ever gets in trouble. And that is my catch rope, I was so happy that after 20 years it was finally used, or was ready to be used....
